Buying a used or second hand car often makes far more sense than buying from new. A car depreciates in value as soon as it is driven off the forecourt so a second hand car can often make more sense financially. There are a few things to consider when buying a second hand car, and much of the worry can be taken out of the process by doing some research beforehand. Before you go looking at cars it is well worth making sure you have the financial side of things in order, either by making sure that you have your loan already in place or your hard earned cash saved in full.
This may give you some leverage in negotiating a price for your vehicle but it also prevents the embarrassing situation of agreeing to buy a car only to find you cannot get the money after all.
Be aware of the current price that you should reasonably be expected to pay. Have a look through the numerous magazines and car price guides available but also do some research on the internet. Look around as many different sources will provide you with the necessary information to make a reasoned decision on an offer. Consider all options when deciding who or where to buy your car from. Buying from a dealer will give you more protection in law should you have a complaint but you should expect to pay more for the vehicle because of the overheads that a garage has to pay. The opposite is true if you buy privately. You may well pay less but you would find it harder to make any claim against the buyer should you need to.
An average car would normally travel between ten and fifteen thousand miles per year. Bear this in mind when checking out the mileage of the car. A car that has been driven more than this on average may well have been used for business reasons and may not necessarily have been treated as well as if it had been privately owned. A higher mileage also means that there will have been more wear and tear on the engine and may mean that the car is that bit closer to needing replacement parts or repairs. It is worth also bearing in mind that the average family saloon is more likely to be easier to maintain and incur less cost than a sporty or luxury car.
Make sure that you check any prospective purchase out thoroughly. Check bodywork in good light and check for any structural changes. Have a look at the mileage and consider whether the mileage on the clock is about right for the year of the car. Low mileage may mean that the car has not been used much, it may also mean that it may not have been able to be driven because it was in need of repair or had been off the road for some reason. Check for oil leaks and when listening to the engine make sure that there are no extra rattles and noises that should not be there. In all instances – take a test drive and do not buy the car without one. The test drive will help you decide how good the brakes, steering and suspension are.
Before you make an offer, make sure the MOT is up to date and that you see any service history documents. Also check that registration and chassis numbers match. You may want to have the vehicle checked over by a mechanic for your peace of mind.
