Many of us are not natural mechanics. Open up the bonnet of a modern car and many of us would not have a clue about what goes where and what needs to be fixed and what does not. This leaves many people vulnerable to overcharging by the more unscrupulous garages. Despite the industries’ attempts to regulate car repairers more closely, there is still a temptation for some garages to take the more naïve customer for a ride.
The opposite of course is true. Due to the fact that many people feel out of their depth with car repairs, there is a temptation to leave things as they are, often until it is too late for a reasonable repair to be carried out. The thought of having to deal with a garage and display a natural ignorance of the inner workings of a motor vehicle fills many people with dread. There are, however, a number of things which the individual can do to minimise garage costs by doing essential simple repairs themselves, or by keeping an eye open for deals which are more suitable to your bank balance.

Have a look to see whether any of the local garages are carrying out services at a reduced rate. If they are find out what is included in the price. It may include a complete oil change, filter check and tyre pressure check, but then again it may not. The chances are if the deal sounds too good to be true, it may well be worth giving the place a wide berth. Many garages get you into the building and then find a number of things wrong with your car which you were probably not aware of and before you know it, you are out of pocket, or too nervous to drive the car home.
If you have a good garage, they’ve given you good service at a reasonable cost, hence they are often places where you can form a long lasting business arrangement. Confidence in your garage or mechanic goes a long way. Do not be afraid to ask around for recommendations. Friends, family and work colleagues are only too eager to tell you about their favourite garage that does good work for a reasonable price. This is good for the business also. Many garages are small local firms and there is no harm whatsoever in keeping the local economy running smoothly.
When you do find a garage you are happy with, it is worth planning with them what kind of work they are carrying out and, if possible get a quote, including labour charges. Never give them the option of carrying out work without prior approval from you. Whilst it may not feel a natural thing to do; it is worth asking the garage to return any old and removed parts of your car. If you are not sure what they are or what they do, do not be afraid to ask. Consider your mechanic as a car surgeon. You would not have an operation carried out unless you understood what it is for, how long it is likely to take and what is involved and the likely outcome. In the modern world, your car is often a vital part of your day, and it needs good competent people looking after it.
If you feel uncertain, go with your gut reaction. It is likely to be right. There are many excellent garages and mechanics out there. It is only a matter of time before a good reputation makes itself known to you.
