There are many variations and opinions as to what makes a classic car. Those differences of opinion often mean that classic cars can often be at the less expensive end of the market, as well as those rarities which are beyond the budget of the majority. Today, there are many car clubs dedicated to the care and preservation of cars, and across the United States and Europe car rallies are popular, regular events are held in order that owners can show off their collection of cars. Many people invest in cars in the same way that others invest in paintings, both for the pleasure of owning the car, but also as a means of making money on their investments at a time when the money markets are volatile.

Some people consider a car to be a classic because it is old, but the Classic Car Club of America are far more specific, claiming that a classic car is one built to a fine and distinctive standard. In general terms a classic car to them is high priced when new and built in limited quantities. However changes to the car such as custom coach work or accessories, or changes to the braking system or clutch may also determine whether a car can be considered to be a classic.

In the United Kingdom, the definition of a classic car is somewhat more vague, however there are two taxation issues which many people use as a cut-off point to determine whether a car is a classic or not. Any car built before the 1st January 1973, is not liable for Vehicle Excise Duty, Road Tax, and therefore is labelled as a ‘historic’ car. However, HM Custom and Excise have a more specific definition. For company taxation purposes, any car over fifteen years old and costing in excess of £15000 is defined as a classic car.

It is probably worth pointing out that safety factors must be taken into account when buying a classic car, as these older cars are likely to have inferior handling and braking systems. In addition suspension and steering are likely to result in greater difficulty in controlling the car in comparison with its modern counterparts. However, although it may be possible to fit seat belts and tyres to comply with modern safety requirements, many owners are unhappy to do so, in case it spoils the original look. In some areas it may however be illegal to drive in a car that is not fitted with basic safety devices. Classic car owners therefore need to have a raised awareness of road safety.

There are many magazines and websites devoted to classic cars. They advertise cars and often report on recently held rallies or future events to be held. There are also many websites offering special deals on car insurance for classic cars. Although classic car drivers statistically have relatively few accidents, drivers need to ensure that their level of cover is appropriate.

Whether your interest lies in classic British cars such as the Aston Martin DB5; a 1950 Bentley Mark IV; a 1969 MG Roadster; a Triumph Spitfire GT6, or whether you prefer American classics such as the 1965 Ford Mustang or 1969 Chevrolet Corvette, there is a lively market for buyers and sellers. It is well worth doing then research beforehand, not just to get the best price, but to make sure you obtain the genuine article. You can then drive it on special occasions or keep it as an investment. Either way it’s still a classic car.

For many people, the option of buying a used car rather than a new one is a far more cost effective option. New cars have often lost a substantial part of their worth as soon as they are driven off the forecourt. However, when buying a used car there are certain pitfalls that need to be avoided. Much upset and heartbreak can be avoided by carrying out some simple preparation in advance.

The financial side of things can be a big stumbling block for many people. By making sure you have your arrangements in place beforehand, you can save yourself much stress and embarrassment. There is little point in finding the right car for you, if you then find that you are not able to get hold of finance. The finance needs to be arranged first. Having the money side of things in order may allow you some leverage when negotiating price. When buying second hand, sellers are more likely to accept cash payments, which can make obtaining a discount easier. Make sure that you know your budget and do not be tempted to stretch yourself further for those extra features.

It is possible to do wide ranging research on the cost of a car nowadays, by researching via the Internet and the various car magazines which are available. Try to learn what you should pay for various extra features for the particular model of car. This extra preparation can save you money. This extra research will also allow you to see where the best deals are. You need to consider what the best option for you is, and where you are liable to feel most comfortable in the buying process.

Buying from a dealer is probably the easier option, however, you may expect to pay a higher price because of the overheads which the garage has. This option also gives you more protection in law if the car turns out to have faults or defects. Buying privately is another option. With any car, you need to make sure that you see any available documentation, such as service history, as well as ownership documents. Make sure that the MOT is up to date. You may want to make sure that the registration and chassis numbers match up. Remember that if a car is stolen, even though you may be unaware of it, it can be taken from you and returned to its rightful owner with no recompense for you, the buyer.

Check the car over thoroughly, before buying, and most importantly, take it for a test drive. Take care to check that the car mileage seems to be right for the age of the car. The average car is used approximately ten thousand miles in a year. More than this, may mean that the car was a company car or used for business purposes which means that it may not have been cared for quite as well as a privately owned model, although there may be a good service history available. A high mileage car will naturally have more wear and care to take into account. Low mileage may mean that the car was not used much, but it could indicate, either that the car was off the road due to a problem, or it could possibly indicate that the mileage has been altered. Check for tampering with the dashboard, worn screws for instance which may indicate interference. Check for oil leaks and unusual engine noise, brakes, steering and suspension. All of this can be tested in a test drive.

For many people, their car is likely to be the largest purchase other than their home, and in the same way, people like to have their car looking and feeling the way they want it to. There are a vast range of accessories available on line and in the shops, some generic and some to suit particular models of car. Everything from headlight covers to boot liners are available, and the chances are if you want a product, someone will have made one. There are products to make your car look better, perform better and even smell better. There are also gadgets designed to make life more convenient as well as safer.

Fed up with having to replace headlight bulbs? You can buy headlight covers which fit easily, which should help to prevent damage to your headlight bulbs. Although the air conditioning in most cars is up to the job, there are car fans available to help keep your car cool in particularly hot weather. This may be particularly useful for passengers in the back of the car. Simply plug into your car cigarette lighter socket.

Driving at speed in hot weather often means that you may like to drive with the windows down but do not want to have to put up with the extra noise from the wind rushing past. Fitting wind deflectors to your side windows should help to reduce noise caused by wind resistance. It is important, and economical to keep your tyre pressures to the correct pressure. Tyre pressure guards can inform you when your tyre pressure is lower, which is not only safer, but can save on your fuel costs. There are also digital air compressors available which means that you can inflate your tyres accurately to the correct level without having to take the car to a garage.

Satellite navigation has become popular in many modern cars, but this has also made them popular as a target for thieves. You can help to disguise that you have a satellite navigation fitted, by fitting a satellite navigation mat which gets rid of the tell tale signs of suction pads, whilst at the same time mounting the satellite navigation system securely, evenly distributing the weight. Another modern option which will aid you when you park your car are parking sensor kits. These are simply fitted and using micro technology, can send out a warning beep when you are parking too close to an object. These kits may have between two and eight sensors, depending on whether you want it purely for reversing, or for all round ease of parking.

Body kits are available to help improve the external look of your car, but there are a wide range of options available to help you improve the inside also. From chrome gear knobs to seat and wheel covers, there are also CD holders and tailored mats. You can even buy mood lighting for your car to produce that extra bit of ambience.

In reality, the way a car looks and feels can be altered beyond all recognition, and the way you add accessories to your car is as individual as your choice of car. From added safety features, to practical accessories, to purely fun items, all are available by carrying out a bit of research, on the Internet or in magazines. You can give your car a unique look, or simply make it as comfortable as possible to get the most from your driving experience.

As more than twenty per cent of cars fail an MOT test each year, a few minutes carrying out basic checks can save you some sleepless nights and possibly some money, especially if you find any minor repairs that you can do yourself rather than let the garage charge you.

On the outside of the car, make sure you fill up the water bottle and check for any cracks in the windscreen. In particular the area that is covered by the wiper blades should be free from cracks, as you are likely to fail a test if there are cracks in this area. Check all your lights to make sure not only that they are working, but also that they are the correct colour. Headlamps, parking lights, reversing lights, indicators and registration plate bulbs, all need to be correct and in good working order. Make sure your registration plate is in good condition and tightly fastened to the car, and also that they are the correct fonts.

Car doors need to be properly working. They should open and close freely. And remain shut when closed. You should be able to open front doors from the inside and outside of the car. Walk around the car, and make sure there is no excessive corrosion, in particular anything that may restrict you from breaking or steering properly.

You must have the correct tyres and that they are inflated to the correct pressure. You will also need to ensure that there is sufficient tread depth, 1.6mm all the way around and also across the central three quarters of the pattern. You also need to ensure that there are no bumps or cuts in the sidewall of the tyre.

Once you have checked the outside of the car, it pays to have a quick look under the bonnet to make sure everything is as it should be. First of all, however, make sure that your steering and suspension is in good working order. Look for excessive play in the steering wheel. Apply your weight to each corner of the car to make sure the suspension settles down quickly. Check the exhaust to make sure there are no bits broken or missing. Switch on the car and make sure there are no extra noises indicating a leak or break in the system and that your silencer is working. Although you cannot check your exhaust emissions yourself without the proper equipment, you will certainly be able to check whether there is an excessive amount of smoke coming from your exhaust, indicating there may be a fault. Visibly check the fuel cap to make sure the seal is not broken. This can cause you to fail an MOT. Also make sure that the fuel system components, such as pipes and hoses are free of leaks and secure in their mountings. You will need to have a quick check of brakes and handbrake, and ensure there are no visible leaks from the brake pipes.

Inside the car; make sure the seats are not loose and able to be locked in the upright position. Importantly, seat belts should not be damaged and should be in good working order. Check that your mirrors are clean and properly positioned, giving good all round vision and finally, make sure that your horn works and is easily accessible.

None of these checks will guarantee an MOT pass, but this extra bit of preparation may ensure it is more likely.

It is easily done. You are in a rush. Distracted whilst you are getting out of the car. Next thing you know, you have slammed the door shut and the car keys are on the inside. Or maybe you have done what sixteen per cent of Britons do each year and lose your car keys. Figures suggest that almost three million people in Britain do not have a spare set of car keys, and it can cost you dearly. Modern car keys are becoming so sophisticated that it is no longer simply a case of using a piece of wire or an old coat hanger to get your self back in the car.

Modern theft prevention systems, including immobilisers, alarms and shielded locks have all added to the cost and although they have been successful in driving car theft numbers down, for the individual who loses their keys, or gets locked out of the car, it can cause a whole range of problems, not least of which is the cost of getting back in your car. Replacement keys can cost as much as £250.00 upwards to replace. Thieves are actually targeting homes to steal the keys of desirable cars, simply because anti theft devices are becoming more efficient.

If you have a set of spare car keys, the trick is to keep them somewhere sensible. There are numerous examples of people putting them in the glove compartment or in hand bags or even on the same key ring as the one that has just gone missing. It may well be that if you have lost your keys and need help getting back in your car that your insurer is likely to call out a locksmith to help get into your car. If one is not available, they may supply you with a local recovery service who may take you back home, or if you prefer, a garage. All of this of course, will be carried out at your expense, and the cost may not stop there if you have to have alarms and immobilisers dealt with.

Many insurers appear to routinely exclude loss of keys in their policies, even though it is something that could happen to us at any time, and perhaps should be included, as it would normally be in any policy insuring against loss. There are one or two insurers who will insure against key loss, but generally you have to pay the cost and claim it back afterwards, but again, it does involve a locksmith coming out and gaining entry to your car. Many people choose to pay the total cost themselves, because with an excess of two hundred pounds on a policy, it may be worth doing this rather than losing your no claims bonus.

If you do need to call out a locksmith, they may well be able to get you up and running relatively easily. Many carry blank keys and transponder chips. Some manufacturers supply key numbers and security codes which enables the locksmith to provide a duplicate. Other types of key need more sophisticated equipment and diagnostic tools.

The best thing though is not to lose your keys in the first place, but each year a large number of people do. Carrying a spare key, somewhere safe and not easily stolen, is the obvious answer. For those of us who are not prepared, however, we might find ourselves learning an expensive lesson.

Buying a used or second hand car often makes far more sense than buying from new. A car depreciates in value as soon as it is driven off the forecourt so a second hand car can often make more sense financially. There are a few things to consider when buying a second hand car, and much of the worry can be taken out of the process by doing some research beforehand. Before you go looking at cars it is well worth making sure you have the financial side of things in order, either by making sure that you have your loan already in place or your hard earned cash saved in full.

This may give you some leverage in negotiating a price for your vehicle but it also prevents the embarrassing situation of agreeing to buy a car only to find you cannot get the money after all.

Be aware of the current price that you should reasonably be expected to pay. Have a look through the numerous magazines and car price guides available but also do some research on the internet. Look around as many different sources will provide you with the necessary information to make a reasoned decision on an offer. Consider all options when deciding who or where to buy your car from. Buying from a dealer will give you more protection in law should you have a complaint but you should expect to pay more for the vehicle because of the overheads that a garage has to pay. The opposite is true if you buy privately. You may well pay less but you would find it harder to make any claim against the buyer should you need to.

An average car would normally travel between ten and fifteen thousand miles per year. Bear this in mind when checking out the mileage of the car. A car that has been driven more than this on average may well have been used for business reasons and may not necessarily have been treated as well as if it had been privately owned. A higher mileage also means that there will have been more wear and tear on the engine and may mean that the car is that bit closer to needing replacement parts or repairs. It is worth also bearing in mind that the average family saloon is more likely to be easier to maintain and incur less cost than a sporty or luxury car.

Make sure that you check any prospective purchase out thoroughly. Check bodywork in good light and check for any structural changes. Have a look at the mileage and consider whether the mileage on the clock is about right for the year of the car. Low mileage may mean that the car has not been used much, it may also mean that it may not have been able to be driven because it was in need of repair or had been off the road for some reason. Check for oil leaks and when listening to the engine make sure that there are no extra rattles and noises that should not be there. In all instances – take a test drive and do not buy the car without one. The test drive will help you decide how good the brakes, steering and suspension are.

Before you make an offer, make sure the MOT is up to date and that you see any service history documents. Also check that registration and chassis numbers match. You may want to have the vehicle checked over by a mechanic for your peace of mind.

Car insurance can be a substantial part of your annual motoring costs but many people do not take the opportunity to try and reduce their insurance outgoings. There are a number of different ways to make significant savings and they are more simple than you may think.

Try not to get into the habit of automatically sticking with the same insurer you had last year. It often is simpler to do this and many insurance companies take it upon themselves to carry on taking the payment until they are told to stop doing so. Your insurer may not automatically offer you the best price available and, ultimately, even if you find out that your quote beats the rest, it is well worth it to shop around and try to get yourself the best deal. One of the easiest methods, and increasingly becoming more popular, is by using comparison websites.

These sites will help you compare insurance prices from many different companies and in many cases you can stipulate your requirements and the site will find you a list of the best ones to suit your circumstances. If you find a deal that you like, it is advisable to pay the premium annually rather than monthly as many companies can charge you as much as twenty per cent for the privilege.

Where you live and your perceived potential for theft and damage may well have a bearing on how much you are asked to pay. By making sure you have good security on your car, either an alarm or immobiliser, or you may even want to consider a tracker device, you can substantially reduce the cost of your insurance premium. Keeping the car in a garage can reduce your costs by as much as ten per cent in some cases. If you don’t have a garage, keep the car off road, perhaps on your drive way.

The car you buy will have it’s own in built insurance group and although your dream car may beat most cars in a road race, you may lose heavily in the insurance stakes. The more ’sporty’ the vehicle is, the more it is likely to attract a high premium because of the desirability factor. Thieves often target these sort of vehicles, either for themselves or to order for someone else. If you have extras on the car make sure that you do not find yourself paying more than you should. You can offer to pay an increased excess payment to reduce the annual cost of your insurance, but you need to make sure that you are not insuring extras unnecessarily. This also applies to any insurance generally. The insurance needs to cover the relevant cost of replacing or repairing your car but this needs to be realistic and using comparison sites can help you decide what is a fair price to pay.

If you happen to have an accident it may not always be the best policy to claim on the insurance policy. By the time you take in to account that the cost of your excess payment is, compared to what the repair costs, it may well be worth biting the bullet and paying the amount yourself. In insurance terms, your no claims bonus is your best friend and is one of the main ways you can keep your costs down, so continue to drive safely and don’t forget to shop around.

There are safe ways to scrap your car and there are the more dangerous methods. Some of the more dangerous methods include driving your car at ninety miles an hour into a tree, or having the car engine suddenly blow up. These of course, are accidental methods, something over which you have no control but there are safer, more environmentally friendly ways to scrap your car over which you have as much control as you want.

The obvious method is simply to take your car to a scrapyard. It is advisable to make sure that the scrapyard is registered. If not, you may find your self a few months down the line with a recovery bill because some unscrupulous person has dumped your car somewhere they should not have done.

You may well have to pay someone to come and tow it away, which is an added attraction for someone who tells you he is a dealer when he is not. Some scrap dealers will also charge you for disposal of certain car parts. There is a good market for second hand car parts, so one route to take may be to dismantle the car yourself, and sell off any parts privately. It has even been known that people have car dismantling parties when your friends come around with trusty spanners in hand and dismantle the car for you.

If you are fortunate to live in an area where the local council have a scrap service available you could take this option. Unfortunately, the councils who do have this option available often find it is very heavily used and you may well have to wait a while for the car to be removed. In this situation the council, may if the wait is too long, simply refer you to a scrap dealer to remove the car for them. The council may have a free service, or they may charge a small fee. Obviously, it is more likely that a dealer will charge you for removing the car. There is now a legal obligation to make sure that your car is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. This means removing electrical sources such as the battery and draining any hazardous chemicals and all this to be done before you get rid of the tyres and usable parts. Your scrap dealer has to have the means of disposing of all these parts, which is why it is important to find a registered scrap dealer. Some of this process can be long and drawn out, but it is important it is done as the law requires and that you have the required Certificate of Destruction at the end of it. Without the certificate, you may still be liable for the car should there be any legal challenge to you. The certificate gives you the evidence and peace of mind the the car was disposed of as is required by law.

You will be able to find the names of locally registered treatment facilities by visiting the Environment Agency web site. This web site will also provide regularly updated information on waste and recycling.

Looking forward to buying a new car also has a flip side, and that is usually the fact that you have to get rid of the old one. With any luck it may have served you well or it may have been a millstone around your neck. Either way the object of the exercise will be to try and get as much money for the old one, so it can contribute towards the cost of the new one.

The approach needs to be to try and make your car as attractive to a buyer as possible, both with regard to looks, mechanically and price wise. First of all the car will need to be spotless inside as well as out. Removing any dirt and dust and getting rid of car stickers enable you to get rid of all the personal touches that make the car yours. A new owner wants to have an affinity with their new car, and having the markings of your ownership all over it, do not give the right impression. Make sure that you check out all the nooks and crannies and small areas which are not easy to get at. Car owners invariably spend lump sums of money and in order for you to get them to part with their hard earned cash, the car has to appear that it can easily become part of their family. If you have any of the original bits of the car that you can put back in, assuming they are in good condition, replace them. It will give the car the appearance of being looked after, which is what a buyer wants to see.

First impressions are vitally important. Even the most naïve of car buyers can easily be put off by something not appearing as it should. Give the car a good clean with a vacuum cleaner and give the body work a polish. Make sure the windows are spotless, and perhaps the odd subtle air freshener might give that clean feeling. Pay particular attention to the steering wheel, gear stick and seat adjustments. The potential buyer will use these areas first of all, especially during a test drive, and these areas need to represent your attention to detail of the care you have lavished on your car.

Once the outside and the inside are spotless have a look under the bonnet. Resist the urge to have the engine steam cleaned to a sparkling brilliance. This can make some buyers suspicious, and sometimes rightly so. Ensure that all the cables are in their correct places, and no do it yourself handy work is on show. Make sure all terminals are clean.

If you have any documentary evidence of how well you have looked after the car, such as a service history, have it handy when your buyer arrives. Obviously make sure that the legal documents are to hand and in order. If there is a lot of paperwork to hand over, put it into an organised file. A handful of garage papers may give the impression that the car has needed regular spending on it.

Before you put the car up for sale, research the market to see what price you should be asking for it. Be realistic. By all means haggle, and know what your lower limit is, but to try and ask more than the buyer feels the car is worth will lose you the sale. A good sale is one where the buyer is happy with the price he bought it for and the seller is happy with the sale price.

Part exchanging an old car for a new model is something that many of us do. You don’t have to deal with car buyers who may potentially waste your time. It solves the problem of having ready cash available and can drastically reduce the cost of your new model, but for many people it is fraught with potential problems which could lose you quite a bit of money. Car dealers are never going to give you what the car would sell for if you sold it privately. Giving you a price which is more than the car is worth is bad business for them. It hits their profit margins and when all said and done, their role is to sell you a car and make a profit at end of the process.

Before going to the showrooms, it is worth doing some research to see what your present car is worth. There are plenty of on-line sites which will help you determine the cost of your car, or alternatively, you can have a look through one of the many car pricing magazines which are available. It may even be worth consulting your local paper to see what a similar model is going for locally. Take into account the different extras which are available. You may need to lower or upgrade your price as a result. You will need to take any evidence of work done to the car, especially if the car has a regular service history, and in particular your MOT certificate.

Try to get your car looking its absolute best before you go in. Any buyer is likely to offer you less if the car looks as though it has had a rough time. If there any blemishes or damage to the car, it is well worth getting it fixed if the price is reasonable. If the car looks as though it has been cared for, it will be easier to sell and the salesman will know that it will also be easier for him to sell later.

The idea is obviously to try and get the difference between what you can get for your old car and the new one as small as possible. Make sure that the salesman sees your car and makes an offer on that basis. Bear in mind that part of his strategy will be to make the difference between the old and the new car as much as possible. He may try and offer you more than you feel your old car is worth in order to try and reduce the chance of you asking for a discount on the new one. Try not to jump at an offer. Give an offer careful consideration and be sure that the deal is the right one for you.

Again, before going to the showroom, make sure you have done your homework on the new car also. Compare various garage prices and what is on offer and use the on-line resources available to you. Take evidence of your research with you. It is more difficult for a salesman to pull the wool over your eyes if he knows you have done your research properly.

If you do not like what has been offered, either for your old car, or the price for the new one, walk away and try another garage. If your original salesman wants the sale badly enough, he will make it easy for you to buy. If he or she does not, well there is always someone else who wants to sell you what you are looking to buy.
